The UK Pavilion at the 2005 World Expo in Aichi, Japan has been designed and created by Land Design Studios. A showcase of innovative UK inventions and discoveries, the pavilion features nine distinct exhibits demonstrating exciting ideas and concepts that visitors can explore in their own time. In addition to these exhibits, the entire pavilion is surrounded by a large scale video and audio installation which echoes the themes of nature and harmony with technology. In collaboration with PLANT, Signwave UK have been commissioned by Land Design Studios to develop a generative, realtime and dynamic soundtrack to complete the ambience of the pavilion. Signwave used this exciting opportunity to test-run a pre-release version of their forthcoming realtime generative audio software, Pure Events.
Currently still in production, Pure Events allows sound designers, musicians, sonic artists and others to explore producing sound in a non-linear, generative and dynamic fashion. Pure Events considers the concept of a sound as one or more events, either at a micro and macro scale. By folding microevents inside macroevents and allowing control of all elements of this technique, Pure Events allows the generation of realtime soundscapes that always change.
Signwave have built the UK Pavilion's soundtrack by sampling tiny natural sounds - nature's clicks, hums and creaks - and pragmatically resequenced them using Pure Events into themes that synchronise with a large scale digital video projection which appears on the pavillion ceiling. But we didn't stop there - we leveraged Pure Event's use of Apple's CoreAudio technologies, allowing us to support synchronised multi-channel output. The result? A 3D soundtrack experience that will always change, never repeat, and sit in perfect harmony with the 2005 EXPO UK Pavilion experience.
